Week 5 – Cut and Paste: Collage the Digital Way

Collage is an artistic composition made from a wide range of various materials. It has never been my forte. But growing up I remember being especially fond of the works by artists Picasso and Braque.

For my collage piece, I began with a photograph I took of Centre place

Using cropped images from photographs of coffee-art that I had taken...

I replaced the shop signs with coffee art. This was done essentially to signify Melbourne’s rich coffee culture

It turned out like this

I continued playing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and its' different filters. Some of which i used included: Accented Edges, Coloured Edges, Coloured Pencil, Crosshatch, Desaturate, Glow, Ink Outlines, Film Grain, Lighting Effects and Texture just to name a few. Here are some examples:

Accented Edges

Lighting Effects

I narrowed my choices down and settled with a few of my favourite filters and made patterns with them:

Using Ink Outlines and Desaturated Ink Outlines

Using Neon Glow and Patchwork

Using Coloured Edges and Glow

Using these small edited photographs that i had been working on, I developed them as photographs and created a larger repetitive mural. This was how i first constructed it, but i wasn't happy with the composition

So i rearranged all the photographs to create a diagonal pattern. I'll still have to fix the frame because im not happy with it. Piece 1 done!

This is an image of piece 1 in its final state
